How to Speak in Italics
As if these words weren’t mine––
the feelings flowing through them
not emphatic enough
to make them stand up on their own,
straight and tall,
like characters from a mythic past,
where everything was larger than life.
As if they needed…more authority
––a wisdom vested in antiquity––
to validate their worth.
Their cursive, listing characters
arrayed in such a way
that they might just withstand
the fickle frailty of fashion.
So perhaps in 20 years, or even 50,
someone else may be inspired
to exhume my words
––prop them up again as an elegy, of sorts––
dragging them forward into the future,
tilting them to the right
just enough
to make them
not entirely their own.
Jeff Volk is a poet, producer, and publisher of Cymatics books and films, a science that demonstrates how audible sound creates harmonic, geometric patterns found throughout nature and in the sacred art and architecture of the world's Wisdom Traditions. His documentary, Of Sound Mind and Body: Music and Vibrational Healing, won the Hartley Film Award through the Institute of Noetic Sciences. His work offers an inclusive perspective that integrates the disparate, as only poetry can. The Ambiguity of Autumn: Poems of Love, Longing and Transcendence is his first book of poetry.Further information may be found at www.cymaticsource.com.
