The Questions You Ask on Winter Retreat

I’m sitting in a circle and you are there:
you, the listener, and all the you’s I’ve ever known.
In the background, the ancestors, bright cloud of witness,
and the book that sings to me.

Now it’s quiet beside the candle.
We’re many faces, and we are one
in the shh of pencils and the quiet
tenderness of the present moment
and yes, the becoming who we are.
Is it fire we’re meant to be?

We’re singing now one to one another
and there’s Someone other in the room with us.
Soul freedom here, a moment of peace:
a presence in the midst.
It is you, the One I cannot see, and yet see everywhere?
