Frederick Foote

Welcome Respite

Death was a kiss of kindness
for her gutted mind
and her decaying body

She welcomed his cold caress

Her loved ones mourned loudly
and blew Death a kiss
as he waltzed her away

Death explodes in reds and golds
Fireworks of visual delights
Celebrate the edge of night
We wish we could fall so bright

A convocation for the dearly departed

A dreary, sodden celebration
in hushed manners and soft asides

A reunion for the next in line
revelation for those too young to die

You pretend he ain't in the room
You spy on him out of the corner of your eye
You duck and dodge his cold shadow

You turn to the sun and the meadow
and the flowers in the field
You hide among the young children

He will not play hide and seek
he meets you in the hallway
offers you his bony hand

Such grace he offers you
Fear and panic turns you away
to fall alone into the darkness
